Joe W. Hawkins, 91, of Hillsboro, died Thursday, November 10, 2005, at Hill Regional Hospital in Hillsboro. Joe was born May 17, 1914 in Hillsboro the son of Jessie James and Mary Ann Craig Hawkins. He lived in Hillsboro most of his life and graduated from Hillsboro High School. On October 13, 1934 he married Jeanette Turner. He was in the grocery business all his life. He and Earl Hightower founded Hawk & High Grocery & Market in the early 1940's and remained a partner until his retirement in 1979. He served as a councilman for the City of Hillsboro. Following his retirement, he and his wife were avid campers and enjoyed fishing. Joe was a faithful life long member of College Hill Church of Christ in Hillsboro. Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, James Hawkins; and three sisters, Mary Dell Morris, Rita Pasche, and Thelma Ridlehuber. Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Hawkins of Hillsboro; a daughter, Jan McClure and husband, Ronnie, of Hillsboro; a grandson, Michael McClure of College Station; and several nephews.
