Joe Angel Rios, Sr., 88, of Itasca, passed away on December 12, 2019. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 15, 2019, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro. Burial will follow at Itasca Cemetery. A rosary be recited at 6:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with visitation to follow from 7-9 p.m.
Joe was born July 18, 1931, in Floresville, Wilson County, Texas to Bruno and Juanita (Marin) Rios. The last living child of eight born to this couple, he was a descendent of the Indigenous people of the Americas and the Spaniards, Portuguese and Basque that settled in Mexico and south Texas. By 1940, Bruno and Juanita had moved their family to Hill County, where Joe lived the majority of his life. He attended school in Grandview and Itasca where he met his wife, Lucy Martinez. They married in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas on December 6, 1951, and spent 68 years together. Early in life, Joe farmed for a living and later worked for the City of Grandview where he retired.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and Ben; sisters, Feliz, Emilia, Joann, Isabel and Felicitas; daughter, Judy Rios Perez; son-in-law, Sergio Perez; and an infant Rios grandson.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy Rios of Itasca; sons, Joe Rios, Jr. of Ft. Worth, Bobby Rios, Sr. and wife, Sharon of Aquilla, and Jimmy Rios and wife, Ester of Burleson; daughters, Sandra Garcia of Hillsboro, Suzanne Vaughan and husband, Mark of Red Oak and Patricia Hooten and husband, Shane of Whitney.
He is also survived by grandchildren, Ninfa Flewitt and husband, Alan, Terri Turner and husband, Jeff, Josie Jones and husband, Nathan, Matthew Rios, Bobby Rios, Jr., Richard Rios and wife, Patricia, Kristina Meeks, Christopher Rios, Michael Garcia, Jenifer Garcia, Brittney Perkins, Brandon Perkins, Erik Montes and wife, Lacey, Tiffany Sawyer, and Jacob Sawyer; step-grandchildren, Steven Bailey and wife, Meagan and Jacob Bailey and wife, Sabrina; 20 great-grandchildren, 6 step-great grandchildren and 3 step great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
