John W. Erwin, 89, of Hillsboro passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, November 3, 2015, at Town Hall Estates Nursing Home in Hillsboro. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Friday, November 6, at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Ken James officiating. Interment will follow at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, November 5, at the funeral home.
On May 8, 1926, John was born in Whitney to Zed B. and Della May (Hulme) Erwin. John married Juanita Kennedy in 1946, and she preceded him in death on April 8, 2008. A lifelong resident of Hill County, he served his country during World War II with the 102nd Infantry Division of the U. S. Army in Europe. For over 30 years, he worked in the road and bridge construction business in the capacity of road project supervisor, including supervising the construction of Interstate 35 east of Hillsboro to the Ellis County Line.
Subsequent to his construction career, he served the people of Hill County for 18 years as County Commissioner for Precinct 4 until his retirement. John dearly loved Hill County and all its citizens. He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Hillsboro where he was a deacon and member of the Fellowship Sunday School class. He was also a member of the Hillsboro Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and Order of the Eastern Star.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers, Claiborne “Doc” Henderson Erwin, Sidney Erwin, Raymond “Shorty” Erwin and Vernon “Red” Erwin; five sisters, Elizabeth “Tommie” Gatlin, Ola Mae Perry, Mary Magdalene “Mitsie” Thompson, Dolly Ellis and Laura Erwin.
His survivors include two daughters, Patricia Erwin of Hillsboro and Gayle Vrana and husband, Larry, of Dallas; and his grandchildren by choice, Mary and Thomas Pratt.
