John Houston, 50, of Hillsboro passed away Friday, March 7, 2014, at Hill Regional Hospital in Hillsboro. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Wade Yarbro and Rev. Sam Houston officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2014, at the funeral home.
John was born May 8, 1963 in Marshall to Sam Houston and Winnie (Woodley) Houston. He grew up in Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School. Shortly after graduation, he went to work for Hilco Electric and would work there for the next 31 years. An excellent lineman, John attended many different lineman schools and enjoyed judging the lineman’s rodeo in Kansas City.
On June 1, 1991, he married Tammy Kimbrell in Hillsboro.
Affectionately known as “Big John,” he loved to ride his motorcycle touring the country and taking pictures and was an avid hunter as well. A former Boy Scout, he learned in his scouting days to always be prepared for anything. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hillsboro.
Preceding him in death was a brother, Philip Houston.
Survivors include his wife, Tammy Houston of Hillsboro; mother, Winnie Houston of Marshall; father, Sam Houston and wife, Carol, of Hillsboro; three children, Taylor Houston and husband, Shawn Rodriguez, Brandi Mabry, and Brooke Kuykendall and husband, Calvie, all of Hillsboro; brother, Paul Houston and wife, Vickie, of Abilene; two sisters, Mandy Knuckols and husband, Mike, of Harleton and Rachel Born and husband, Brandy, of Marshall; sister-in-law, Diane Houston of Abilene; and six grandchildren, Jay, Jaiden, Maddison, Mason, Kameryn, and Kyleigh.
