John Charles Overton, 93, of Whitney, went to be with our Lord and Savior on February 21, 2023.Graveside services will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Whitney Memorial Park in Whitney, Texas. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11am- 12pm at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Whitney, Texas.
Charles was born on February 3, 1930, to Jessie and Toni Freeman Overton in Crosbyton, Texas. He joined the Army in August of 1948, served in the occupation of Japan, and was discharged November 16, 1949. He married Hazel Marie Smith on September 29, 1951, and they had three sons: David, Jeff, and Steve. Charles served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Whitney for several years. He was in the construction business for 20 years, during which time he worked on the building of the Whitney Dam. In 1970, he established J.C. Overton & Sons Construction. Company. They built many homes in and around Whitney, including the new Prairie Valley Baptist Church. Charles married Eileen June (Stark) Sharrow on September 4, 1976. He volunteered his time serving the community of Whitney in many capacities, including the City Council and the Hospital Board from 1987-1998. Charles will be mostly remembered by his family and all who knew him for his extraordinarily kind heart and generosity to anyone in need.
Preceding him in death were his father and mother, wife Hazel, son and daughter-in-law David and Mary Overton, brother and sister-in-law Shine and Lena Overton, sisters and brothers-in-law Wanda and Chesley Auten, Raye and Al Epps, Sue and Don Brown, June and Jim Carmichall, Melvin Caperton, Dan DeLisle, niece and nephews, Susie, Jeff, and Danny DeLisle, and grandson-in-law, Bobby Hightower.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Eileen; children and spouses Nancy and David Ridlehuber, Jeff and Ruth Overton, Maynard and Donna Sharrow; Steve Overton; Mike and Kim Sharrow, Tricia and Steve Ashcraft; sister Polly Caperton; sister-in-law Judy DeLisle; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Brandon Overton, Brian Ashcraft, Matt Sharrow, Jake Overton, Dawson Hightower, and Brendon Aguirre
The family would like to thank Dr. Justin Squyres and the nursing staff at Goodall-Witcher Hospital and the Sales Family Hope Center nursing staff.
