Johnny Loyd Greer

Johnny Greer, of Waco, Texas, age 67, passed away on January 23, 2024, after a brief illness. He was born Johnny Loyd Greer on December 22, 1956, in Dallas, Texas, to John William Greer, Jr and Margaret Joan Greer. Johnny was raised in Dallas Texas before the family settled in DeSoto, Texas. He graduated from DeSoto High School in 1975, playing four years of football as a guard on the DeSoto Fighting Eagles team. The highlight of his Varsity year was earning his football letter after playing the Quarter Finals game at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas as they were trying for the State Championship. In his Senior year he also boxed with the Golden Gloves, Dallas, Texas. He continued his education at Mountain View Community College from 1975-1977, studying Art and majoring in Architectural Drafting. Johnny was married to his high school sweetheart, Denise Manzi, of DeSoto, Texas, formerly Trumbull, Connecticut., from 1978-2003 and had two sons.

He began his career at Milton R. Reagan, Inc. in Duncanville, Texas as a Draftsman, from 1978-1988. In 1988-1994 he moved his family from Texas to North Carolina to work as a draftsman for Dan Amer, a Danish/American Pre-cast Concrete Co., in Oxford. In 1994-1998, he moved his family to Henderson, North Carolina, purchasing their first home and taking a new position in Raleigh, North Carolina, with a large Civil Engineering firm, HNTB, Corp., working as a Draftsman/AutoCAD operator. In 1998 he was transferred to the HNTB office in Denver, Colorado, where he worked until 2001, achieving his lifelong dream of living in Colorado and being closer to family. From 2001-2004 he was employed by Douglas County Government, Engineering Department, in Castle Rock, Colorado, working as a Traffic Engineering Technician, from 2001-2004. In 2006, Johnny moved back to Texas to be near his family, settling in Waco and worked a number of years for the City of Waco in the Traffic Division as Traffic Analyst, before retiring in 2019.

Johnny had many hobbies. He loved camping, snow skiing, and hiking, especially hiking a few 14,000 high mountains (14ers) in Colorado! He enjoyed deer and dove hunting, 4-wheeling in his jeep, shooting guns, and was a huge Civil War buff. He took his family to various battlefields and attended re-enactments along the East Coast. He was an avid reader of theology books, enjoyed playing music on his keyboard and guitar, as well as being a photography buff, taking many photos and making slides of his adventures. He also enjoyed a good cigar.

He is survived by his siblings, Angela Lane (Kevin), Teresa Richardson (Dennis), and Richard Greer (Keri). He is also survived by his 2 sons and their spouses, Jonas Avrin, formerly John Robert Greer (Nicole), and Philip Greer (Catherine), and 2 grandchildren Benjamin Greer and Adeline Greer.

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, John William Greer, Jr and Margaret Joan (Davidson) Greer. The family will hold private services in Irene, Texas, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Johnny’s memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
