Joseph Edwin Matthews, 92, of Fort Worth passed away Saturday, March 17, 2012, in Fort Worth. At Joe Ed’s request, funeral services for “kinfolk” only will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Robyn Young officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at the funeral home.
Joe Ed was born April 20, 1919 in Liberty Hill, a small farming community outside of Hillsboro in Hill County, to the late Robert Alonzo and Ola Mae (Tonnahill) Matthews. He attended schools in Hill County, including Hillsboro High School, where he earned all-state honors in football. He attended Daniel Baker College, which merged with Howard Payne in Brownwood, on a football scholarship. During World War II, Joe Ed served his country in the United States Army in the 36th Division. He was injured in a training exercise and was honorably discharged. On January 17, 1942, he married the love of his life, Pattie Reba Wilson of Itasca. They moved to Fort Worth where he went to work at the “bomber plant” (now known as Lockheed). He was in management there for over 40 years, retiring in 1984. In retirement, Joe Ed and Pattie traveled extensively all over the United States and Canada in their R.V., often taking their children and grandchildren. Joe Ed was a member of the Overton United Methodist Church in Fort Worth and was a 50 plus year member of the Julian Field Masonic Lodge #908 in Forth Worth. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Garland and Bobby Wayne Matthews; one sister, Ozell Payne; and his grandson, Ryan Lee Matthews.
Survivors include his wife, Pattie Reba Matthews of Fort Worth;, three children, Joanne Moler and husband, Ed, of Granbury, Eloise Matthews of Dallas, and James D. Matthews and wife, Gerry Ann, of Ft. Worth; sister-in-law, Bobby Dean Matthews of Burleson; three grandchildren, Dr. Edward J. Moler and wife, Jane, of Walnut Creek, CA, Donald Wayne Moler and wife, Kamila, of Port St. Lucie, FL, and Shea Matthews Patterson and husband, Matt, of Fort Worth; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Grace Moler and Joseph Steven Moler both of Walnut Creek, CA and James Ryan Patterson of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces and nephews; and good friend, Marilyn Brown.
