Joyce Bowers

Joyce A. Bowers, age 75, of Hillsboro passed away Friday evening, April 28, 2017, at her home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, May 2, at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Judge John Milburn officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM, Monday at the funeral home.

Born in Abbott on April 3, 1942, Joyce was the daughter of George and Mary Mayo. She and Kenneth Floyd Bowers, Sr. were united in marriage on January 9, 1960 and shared a loving 38 years together until his passing on October 10, 1998.

For 12 years, Joyce worked for The Legends Assisted Living in Hillsboro as a med aide. She loved assisting and taking care of the residents in her care with whatever they might need. A Baptist, God was of first importance to her and it showed in her love for others. She especially enjoyed listening to all types of gospel music.

A devoted mother and grandmother, her family was her life. She loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally. In her spare moments, she often would crochet for relaxation.

She was also preceded in death by two children, son, Kenneth Floyd Bowers, Jr. on October 27, 2008 and daughter, Donna Renee Handy on July 19, 2016; and a grandson, Tommy Scott Smith on March 12, 1987.

Left to cherish her memory are three children, Daniel Bowers and wife, Jane, of Burleson, Dennette Hamilton and husband, Randy, of Itasca and Gwen Ward and husband, Bailey, of Hillsboro; son-in-law, David Handy; 10 grandchildren, Tyler and Kimberly Smith, Brittany and Daniel, Amanda and Ashlee Handy, Daniel Bowers, Jr., Kaitlyn Bowers, Mark Tacker, and Johnny Hamilton; along with 7 great grandchildren, Rileigh, Nolan, Karson, Hunter, Braxton, Avery and Jacob.

Other survivors include close family friends, Clarence and Susie Presley, as well as several nieces, nephews, other extended family and a host of friends.

Her family requests that memorials in her memory be directed to the American Cancer Society, 1700 Lake Success Drive, Waco, TX 76710; American Heart Association, PO Box 841125, Dallas, TX 75284-1125; or the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 8131 LBJ Freeway, Dallas, TX 75251.
