Joyce Cain

Joyce McCreight Cain passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2024, in Hillsboro at the age of 94.

Joyce was born May 24, 1930, to Joe and Nettie Sumner McCreight near the Hill County community of Woodbury, Texas. She was the middle and only daughter with five brothers. Growing up during the Great Depression presented the McCreight family with many challenges trying to make a living on a small family farm. Seeking employment, the family moved to Dallas and later on to the shipyards in Orange, Texas, during the start of World War II. After the war, Joyce moved to Bynum with her family where she finished her high school education, graduating from Bynum High School in 1947.

After graduation, she worked in Dallas until she married Pat Cain and moved to Hillsboro, Texas. The marriage produced two daughters, Vicki Ann and Cheri Lyn. A long-time resident of Hillsboro, Joyce was a proud homemaker and loving mother, always helping out where she could to provide her girls with whatever they needed.

After her children were grown, Joyce worked at the Hill County Courthouse, and was a faithful employee of T B Bond Drug Store. She made many friends while working there, and she was the smiling face that greeted all the T B Bond customers. After Wal Mart opened their store, she became one of the famous Wal Mart Greeters. It was a natural job for Joyce as welcoming customers, assisting shoppers, and answering questions were what she did best. And Wal Mart's management and employees would be the first to confirm that.

Joyce was a long-time member of the Line Street Methodist Church. She made sure her daughters were in Sunday School and Church every weekend. Teaching Sunday School and helping with Vacation Bible School showed her faith and commitment to her church and the Christian community. She moved her membership to the First Methodist Church of Hillsboro and has remained a member there until her passing.

When she was not playing with Jordy the cat, one of the things Joyce liked to do best was show off her green thumb by growing beautiful plants which she would share with friends and family. Some of her most fun times were spent with friends dancing at Geneva Hall in Elm Mott. But probably her most cherished memories included watching her grandson, Matt Crain, play all kinds of sports from T Ball through high school. And later on, when great-grandsons, Gus and Dub Crain, started playing sports, she would be there to watch their games...up until the time that it was not feasible for her to travel. But thankfully, she had the GameChanger app and never missed an inning. Joyce was a blessing to her family, and she truly loved them with all her heart.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Nettie McCreight; brother, Bennie McCreight and wife, Nell, DeWitt McCreight, Joe Tom McCreight and wife, Billie Joe, Lloyd McCreight and wife, Bonnie, and Gary McCreight.

Joyce is survived by daughters, Vicki Crain and husband, Sam, and Cheri Cain; grandson, Matt Crain and wife, Nicole; great-grandsons, Gus Crain and Dub Crain, all of Hillsboro. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
