Judge Charles Herd


Charles was the son of Charlie and Bertie Hawkins Herd. He grew up in Irene and graduated from Malone High School. After graduating from Sam Houston State University, he worked in the oil and gas industry for a number of years in both west and south Texas. During WWII, Charles served in the Army, receiving several recognitions, including the purple heart. On November 23, 1946, he married Patsy Ruth Winn in Rockwall, Texas. He served as Hill County Judge for 7 years, retiring November 15, 1991. Judge Herd was involved with the Texas Democratic Party for many years and was also active with the Boy Scouts while in west Texas. He loved to fish, travel, fly airplanes and ride his motorcycle. He also enjoyed playing his keyboard with local country swing bands. Survivors include: Wife, Patsy Herd of Irene; Daughters, Linda Willis and husband Doug of Irene, and Laura Greer of San Antonio; Sister, Margie Germany of Hurst; 6 Grandchildren, Philip Greer and wife Amy of Kyle, Richard Greer of Austin, Patrick Greer of Austin, Laura Kramer of Irene, John Willis and wife Summer of Waxahachie, and Leah Borel and husband Stan of Chapel Hill; 7 Great-grandchildren, Chasity and Jack Willis; Mikaylie, Tierra, and Jenna Borel, Jacob and Ashlynn Greer.
