Karl W. Petzold, age 69, of Gholson passed away peacefully Thursday morning July 21, 2016, at Providence Hospice Place at St. Catherine Center in Waco following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 24, 2016, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Pastor Matthew Canion of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellmead officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Karl will lie in state from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, at the funeral home.
On January 6, 1947, Karl was born in Clifton to Walter A. and Josephine (Zander) Petzold. He grew up in Clifton and graduated from Clifton High School before moving to Hillsboro in 1971 where he lived for most of his adult life. Initially, he went to work for Hillcrest Carpets driving their trucks across the nation. Among his many other skills, Karl was a resourceful mechanic and operated his own repair shop and towing service for a number of years. In addition, he was a heavy equipment operator and certified welder. He helped build many of the major roads and bridges in Central Texas working for Knife River Corporation, as well as other contractors. Following his retirement, he also worked for Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors as a transport driver.
Karl and Shirley A. Carroll were united in marriage on January 23, 1983 and she preceded him in death on July 13, 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Karl never met a stranger. In his younger days, he enjoyed getting together with friends and playing music on his guitar. In his spare time, he loved cruising Texas lakes on his boat and doing some fishing. He also enjoyed putting his welding talent to use making metal animals for his friends.
One of his greatest pleasures came in recent years as he participated in the dance nights at the Sul Ross Senior Center in Waco. The fun times and friends found there helped him immensely through his fight with cancer. A life-long Lutheran, Karl was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellmead.
He is survived by his son, Karl J. Petzold and wife, Stephanie, of Rockport; three grandchildren, Austin, Ashlee, and Aaron Petzold, all of Rockport; a brother, Joe Petzold of Clifton; and other extended family and many friends.
Heartfelt thanks go to all the staff of Providence Hospice for the compassionate and tender care they provided to Karl. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1301 Hogan Lane, Waco, TX 76705; Providence Hospice at www.providencehospice.org; or the charity of one’s choice.
