LCDR Herbert “Lee” Malone, USN Ret., 97, of Hillsboro passed away Thursday, March 29, 2018, at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Hillcrest in Waco. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Deacon Joseph Bledsoe of First Baptist Church in Euless officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Tuesday prior to service time. Military graveside services with full honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Hillside Cemetery in Purcell, OK. Mr. Malone will lie in state from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday, April 2, at the funeral home.
Born August 28, 1920 in Henrietta, TX, he was the son of John Herbert and Josie (Gilmore) Malone. He grew up in Atoka where he graduated from high school. Following graduation, Lee enlisted in the United States Navy and retired in 1970 with 34 years of service as a Lt. Commander. Following his retirement from the Navy, Lee owned and operated three marinas in Orlando, FL for a number of years. On January 7, 1989, he was united in marriage to Beatrice “Bee” Barnum Grant in Dallas and relocated to Hillsboro in 2005.
Lee and Bee loved to travel all over the country in their Airstream. He was very proud to have visited all seven continents, with Antarctica being the most recent in 2014 at age 94. In his spare time, Lee enjoyed fishing and especially enjoyed traveling to Alaska to fish there.
He was a member of VFW, Military Officers Association of American (MOA), Wally Byam Airstream Club International, North Texas Airstream Club (NTAC), and was of the Baptist faith. Lee was respected as a true gentlemen by those who knew him.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Bee on November 18, 2012; two brothers, Bill and Dan Malone; and three sisters, Doris Winters, Lucille Wright, and Joyce Bolls.
Survivors include two step-children, Cindy Sullivan and husband, Skip, of Bedford and Kirk Grant and wife, Carmen, of Dallas; three grandchildren, Chris Sullivan and wife, Amy, Miranda Grant, and Todd Grant; three great-grandchildren, Naomi Jimenez, Nora Sullivan, and Miranda Rose; and eleven nieces and one nephew, Nancy Grimes, Beverly Ogle, Peggy Lynn Mills, Nancy Kay May, Billie June Bussey, Sarah DeHardy, Marie Schindler, Cathy Buckus, Peggy Jo Steger, Cheryl Rhynes, Vicki Fuller, and Johnny Winters.
