Lemmie Franklin Young, Jr., 74, of Whitney, passed away Saturday October 4, 2014, at his residence. No services are scheduled at this time.
Lemmie was born in Brownsboro on December 3, 1939, to the late Lemmie Franklin Young, Sr. and Katie Augusta (Gilcrist) Young. He and Vivian Lowe were married on July 10, 1965, in Middletown, Pennsylvania. During the Vietnam War, he served his country in the United States Air Force from 1962 until 1969.
While living in Tyler, Lemmie and Vivian owned and operated Lem's World for 6 years. In 1983, the couple moved to Whitney and Lemmie began work in the print shop for the Veterans Administration in Waco. Following his time with the VA, he began a 14 year career with the Lake Whitney Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1999.
Some of Lemmie's favorite hobbies included woodworking, fishing, hunting and writing poems. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Preceding him in death were a daughter, Theresa Young; two brothers, Emmett and John Young; and three sisters, Mageline Atkinson, Ethel Sykes and Ann Murphy.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Vivian Young; two children. Larry Young and wife, Josephine, of Schertz and Peggy Young of Whitney; three sisters, Dolly Cotten of Palestine, Ila McLemme of Tyler, and Faye Kirkland and husband, Jack, of Sunnyvale; and three grandchildren, James Young of Whitney, Nicholas Young of Schertz, and Samuel Jones of Whitney.
