Leona Lucas

Leona was the daughter of Asa M. and Ila Velma Carroll Howard. She lived in the Malone area most of her life. On Sept. 10, 1948, she married J D Lucas. He would precede her in death on Oct 17, 2001. During her working years, Leona was a nurse's aide at both Callaway-McNutt Nursing Home in Hillsboro and the Hubbard City Hospital. In addition, she was a cook for the Penelope schools. She loved to raise vegetables in her garden, especially tomatoes; and also enjoyed crocheting and knitting as long as she was able. She was a long-time member of the Malone Baptist Church. Also preceding her in death were her parents; infant daughter, Mary Ellen Lucas; brother Martin Howard; and 4 grandchildren, Lou Pope, Charles Dean Pope, Kenneth Christian, and Sherry Denise Kyle. Survivors include her four children: Charles Pope and wife, Paulette of Malone; Buddy Pope and wife Sally of Vilonia, Arkansas; Ila Mae Christian and husband, Stanley of Malone; and Notie Watson of Malone. Also one sister, Hattie Mae Motley and husband, Doyle of Waco; sister-in-law, Marie Howard of Waco; and 13 gandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
