Leona Rodgers

Leona “Jake” Rodgers, 79, of Hillsboro passed away Wednesday morning, October 24, 2018, at Hill Regional Hospital in Hillsboro. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 29, 2018, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro with Rev. Melissa Graham, Rev. Edward Sumrall and Dr. Michael Charles officiating. Burial will follow at Hickey Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Born August 15, 1939, in Lamesa, she was the daughter of Luther Cecil and Sudie Mae (Waterson) Richardson. As a child, she moved to Hubbard with her family and was a 1958 graduate of Hubbard High School. In 1959, Jake received her nursing degree from Grant Buie Nursing School in Hillsboro and for the next 50 years worked as a surgical nurse at both Grant Buie Hospital and Hill Regional Hospital.

On February 10, 1962, she was united in marriage to Billy “Fats” Rodgers and he preceded her in death on July 21, 2013. She was a member of Line Street United Methodist Church and enjoyed crocheting and reading in her spare time.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; twin brothers, L. E. Richardson and L. C. Richardson; and sister, Polly Abbott.

Survivors include her children, Andy Rodgers and wife, Katherine, of Herndon, VA and Susan Rodgers of Hillsboro; three sisters, Vickie Page and husband, Don, of Muskogee, OK and Molly Holbrook and Martha Richardson, both of Tucson, AZ; three grandchildren, Caroline Rodgers, Meredith Rodgers, and Nolan Rodgers, all of Herndon, VA; two brothers-in-law, Jerry Abbott of Muskogee, OK and Jerry Keen of Clifton; and numerous cousins and other family members in several surrounding states.
