Les Powers, 87, of Hillsboro died Friday, November 28, 2008, at Providence Health Care Center in Waco. Les was born June 23, 1921 in Hillsboro, Texas, where he grew up, the son of Leslie Otis and Vestia Ann Quick Powers. A graduate of Hillsboro High School, Les went on to graduate from Texas A&M in 1951 with a B.S.E. in mechanical engineering degree. On August 13, 1947 he married Katherine McCoy. During WWII, he served his country in the U. S. Army 143rd Infantry L Company. For 14 years, he worked at Texas Instruments before coming back to Hillsboro to become Vocational Instructor at Hill College for 15 years. He was Tax Assessor and City Inspector for the City of Hillsboro before retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Hillsboro Masonic Lodge and was a Golden Trowel Award recipient. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Jake Powers and David Powers; and two sisters, Manilla Turner and Fleta Ledbetter. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Katherine Powers of Hillsboro; daughter, Suzanne Tucker-Hendricks and husband, Tom, of Dallas; two grandchildren, Carson Tucker and wife, Mika, of Little Rock, AR and Haley Tucker of Miami, FL; two sisters, Benita Gibson and Clara Roberts.
