Lewis Dale Millegan, of Whitney, passed away on July 11, 2016, at a Waco hospital. The family will hold a memorial service at 10:00 a.m., July 19, 2016, at Open Range Cowboy Church in Whitney.
Lewis was born on July 19, 1938, to Carlton and Elgiva (Mears) Millegan, in Kingsville where he grew up and attended school. After high school, he went into the United States Air Force, from 1956-1976, where he started his law enforcement career in the military.
During his time in the Air Force, he was employed as a working sergeant for 15 of the 20 years of service and attended several police and management schools. While stationed in Washington, D.C., he attended the Washington, D.C., Police Department Reserve Officers Academy and served almost 2 years as a reserve officer. Also assigned to the Air Force Security Service, he hald a top secret Department of Defense clearance and flew with the Joint Chiefs of Staff for 2 years.
On December 1, 1978, in Chandler Arizona, he married Susan Sunderland.
After retiring from the Air Force, he worked as a police officer in several locations in Arizona.
He served in the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Phoenix, as a full time State Police officer from 1976-78, attending the Reserve Academy in 1976 and working as a Reserve Officer.
From 1977-78, he was a full time State Police officer for the Arizona State Capitol Police, obtaining a regular officer commission in 1978. From 1978-1980, he worked as a city police officer for Chandler Police Department in Chandler, Arizona. As a patrol deputy for the Coconino County Sheriff’s Department in Flagstaff from 1980-1985, he also worked in the jail division and as an acting sergeant, supervising both police and civilian personnel.
From 1985-87, he was a member of the Eager Police Department in Eager, Arizona, working as a patrolman, firearms inspector and detective sergeant. He also worked for Springerville Police Department in Springerville, Arizona in investigations, in undercover narcotics, as a firearms instructor and as a senior patrol office.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and was also a member of the Open Range Cowboy Church in Whitney.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister and a three brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Millegan and son, Matthew Millegan.
