Lewis Reyes, 81, passed away Friday, March 25, 2011 at his residence in Northglenn, CO. Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, April 1, 2011, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro, TX. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 5-9 P.M. on Thursday, March 31, 2011, at the funeral home.
Lewis was born in Waxahachie, TX to Joaquin and Sebastiana (Pineda) Reyes. He attended Hill Junior College on a football scholarship, and then went on to attend Southern Methodist University and the University of Colorado in Denver. On Dec. 22, 1951, Lewis married Amelia Ramirez in Hillsboro. For 41 years, he worked as a Regional Manager for the American Cyanamid Company, eventually retiring in 1991. Lewis served in the Texas National Guard 49th Armored Division from 1948-1958.
For the majority of his life Lewis made Colorado his home. There, he was active in numerous civic organizations: volunteering for the Channel 9 Health Fair for 12 years at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish; Chairman for the District 12 Superintendent’s Hispanic Advisory Council; Adams County Community Corrections Board Member; Chairman of Impact on Wellness, an adult day care center; member of the Board of Directors for Clinica Campesina, a community health service for the underserved; member of City of Northglenn Citizen Affairs Board; member of the Colorado Historical Society Hispanic Advisory Council; Volunteer Coordinator for the Denver Museum of Natural History and Head of the Meso-American Study Group; lastly, he was a dedicated Board Member Emeritus of the Clinica Family Health Service sine 1994.
Above all, Lewis never ceased believing in the equality and basic good of all peoples. His humanitarianism inspired all he did, always finding ways to use his voice and influence for the benefit of those less fortunate. Following his retirement, Lewis became even more involved with bettering the access of underpriviliged to quality healthcare and education.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Inez Aguilar and Juana Ramos. He is survived by his wife, Amelia Ramirez Reyes of Northglenn, CO.; son and daughter-in-law, Gilbert Reyes and Monica Bordash of Northglenn; daughter and son-in-law, Rosanna Reyes and Alex Villagran of Denver; a brother, Cisco and Mary Reyes of Lancaster, TX; sister, Margaret Maldonado and husband, Augustine, of Lancaster; grandson, Stefan Reyes, of Northglenn; sisters-in-law Josephine Torres and Margaret Gonzales; and incalculable nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
