Lois Mcconathy

Lois Juanita Fair McConathy, 91, a lifetime resident of Whitney and Hill County, passed away recently at Rest Haven Nursing Home in West. Funeral services will be at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Chapel in Whitney on Monday, July 9, at 10:00 AM, with the Reverend Rusty Penney officitiating. Visitation will be Sunday, July 8, from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. Pall bearers will be former students.

Mrs. McConathy was born February 4, 1921, in Bryan, Texas to Deward Lester Fair and Beaula Ester (Neal) Fair. She was the oldest of six children. Soon after her birth, the family moved to Hill County where she remained until her death. She attended school in Huron and graduated from Blum High School. She obtained her BA in Education from North Texas University and her Master of Education from Baylor University.

On October 22, 1939, she married C.B. McConathy, Jr., who preceded her in death after forty-nine years of marriage. The couple enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling together and doing Little League Baseball.

She is survived by two daughters, Reta Vondean Penney of West and Peggy Land of Waco. There are five granddaughters, Lavonne Penney Blalock of Boerne, Carolyn Youngblood of Whitney, Clycinda Penney of West, Janis Flores of Leander, and Cheryl Anjanette Reed of Lakeway. There is one grandson, Matthew Charles Land of Waco; seven great-granddaughters and four
great-grandsons.

The love of Mrs. McConathy’s life was teaching. She began her career at Crow Community and Bethel Community before becoming a teacher in Whitney in 1952. After retiring in 1983, she worked with GED program until her health prevented her from continuing.
