Loyd R. Strawn, 76, of Hillsboro passed away Sunday, August 30, 2015, at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 3, 2015, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Richard “Clay” Strawn officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at the funeral home.
Loyd was born March 27, 1939 in Cooper, the son of Ollie Loyd and Mary Evelyn (Province) Strawn. For 24 years, he worked for Asplundh Tree Experts, advancing to General Foreman. He also had his own business during this time. On January 25, 1964, Loyd was united in marriage to Elizabeth Joyce Dool. The couple purchased their first convenience store in 1981 at 222 E. Franklin Street in Hillsboro. They owned and operated the store until his retirement in 2000. Loyd also owned and managed two other stores, one in Hillsboro and one in Corsicana. He loved working with the people in the Hillsboro community. After his retirement, Loyd and Elizabeth, purchased and managed rent houses.
An active member of the First United Pentecostal Church in Hillsboro, Loyd loved working with the church family and going with the quiz teams to quiz tournaments. For years, he had been committed to help finance much of the Bible quiz team, even purchasing their traveling van, keeping it in working condition. He often drove the van to the tournaments and encouraged the quizzers to study the Word of God and learn the verses perfectly.
Preceding him in death were his parents; four sisters, Mary Strawn, Ruby Strawn, Julie Gurganus, and Lois Averitt; and one brother, Ricky Lee Strawn.
Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Elizabeth Joyce Dool Strawn; three sons, Richard “Clay” Strawn and wife, Kaylynn, of Hillsboro, Wesley Patrick Strawn of Hillsboro, and Billy Strawn and wife, Heather, of College Station; two daughters, Shila Yvonne Yeats of Weatherford and Angela Jo Livingston and husband, Chris, of Burleson; four sisters, Cherry Martin, Wanda Kyle and husband, Neil, Brenda Rockstroh, and Lily Nichols; brother, David Strawn and wife, Lisa; brother’s wife, Cindy Strawn; special nephew, Jason Dool; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives; and a host of friends.
