Mabel Oda Cunningham, 96, of Hillsboro died Friday, December 30, 2005, at Town Hall Estates Nursing Home. Mabel was born July 19, 1909 in Arcola, Illinois the daughter of Ephrim Hopper and Leota Engeline Poynter Wharton. Her mother passed away when she was two years old and her grandmother, Sally Tharp Wharton raised her. Mabel married Vorice ?Jack? Cunningham in Terre Haunte, Indiana on Aug. 6, 1932. They had one daughter, Leota Florence, stillborn on Sept. 29, 1933. Mabel and Jack lived in Effingham, IL where she worked and retired from Norge/Fetters. Upon retirement, they moved to Yalaha, FL in 1969, where Jack died in 1983. Mabel moved to Hillsboro in 1998 living at Allen?s Point. Also preceding her in death were her father; a foster son, Melvin Wines; two sisters, Laura Anderson of Iowa and Mary Wharton of Illinois; and three brothers, Floyd Wharton of Iowa and Florida, Richard ?Doris? Wharton of Chicago, IL, and ?Bill? Wilbur Wharton of Iowa. Survivors include her foster grandchildren, Kirk Wines, Gary Wines, Freda Toon; and their mother Vivian Wines; and many nieces and nephews.
