Mable Olivia Goodman

Mable Olivia (Potter) Goodman, age 92, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2019, at Sunset Lutheran Home in Clifton. A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church in Hillsboro.

Mable was born on August 6, 1926 in Brandon, Texas to Samuel Leonidus Potter and Margaret Ava (Orr) Potter. She grew up on a farm between Brandon and Bynum. She joined the First Presbyterian Church in Brandon in 1942 at age 15. In 1944 she graduated from Bynum High School where she was a member of the women’s basketball team.

On January 18, 1946, she married Troy Eugene Goodman. They made their home in Hillsboro. They joined the First Presbyterian Church in Hillsboro soon after their marriage. Her life was filled with raising four baby boomer children, gardening, traveling, and caring for aging family members.

As a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over seven decades, Mable served in many capacities. She served as a deacon, an elder, organized bereavement meals for families, kept the kitchen organized and stocked, polished silver, folded thousands of newsletters by hand and countless other tasks as needed. She was well known at church potluck lunches for her pecan pie. As a representative of First Presbyterian Church she volunteered many hours weekly at Hillsboro Interfaith Ministries for over 12 years in the food pantry. Her role was organizing, training other volunteers and feeding the hungry. The cookbook titled Thyme with Friends was published and dedicated to Mable by her daughter, Kay Goodman. Mable’s legacy of feeding the hungry continues through donations of the book’s proceeds to the North Texas Food Bank. Mable was a good and faithful servant. The community was a better place because she was generous with her time and talents.

Preceding her in death was her husband of 72 years, Troy Goodman.

Survivors included four children, William, Sue, James, and Kay; and five grandchildren, Amy, JoAnna, Christopher, Amanda, and Andrew.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 635, Hillsboro, TX 76645.
