Born June 2, 1920 in Whitney, Texas. Margarette was the daughter of the late George Alonzo Nowlin and Othma Sharp Nowlin and sister to Alonzo Alphonso Nowlin. During her early childhood years, the family moved to Malone, Texas where Margarette attended school and received recognition for academic excellence as the honor graduate of her class in 1937. Afterwards, Margarette attended the McBride Business School in Dallas, Texas where she began her career in the food industry as an accountant apprenticing with H.L. Green Company. Upon graduation, Margarette accepted a position with Purity Ice Cream Company, acquired later in a corporate merger by Swift Company. She enjoyed Swift and her co-workers immensely and was enthusiastic at the challenges and adventure the company offered. She gladly accepted numerous transfers requiring extensive travel and relocation. Among the many places where Margarete lived while working with Swift included Fort Worth, Texas, Memphis, Tennessee, Chicago, Illinois, and Reading, Pennsylvania. Margarette remained with Swift for 60 years working at multiple levels of management until retirement. Margarette returned to Whitney in 1963 to care for her mother and brother who suffered from long term illnesses and until their passing, balanced her time between her work and caring for them. Margarette maintained a very active life volunteering her talents in several capacities, such as volunteer hospital administrator, at Lake Whitney Medical Center for 18 months and served on the board as long as her health allowed. Other volunteer activities include, Whitney Area Museum and fund raising for cancer research. She was charter member of the Eastern Star #6, Memphis, Tennessee and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy UDC. She was an avid organic gardener and was known for her beautiful flower gardens providing enjoyment for passers by and was an enthusiastic composter. Needlepoint and cross stitch were her other pastimes. Margarette came in to a life long relationship with Jesus Christ at a very an early age- accepting Him as her Savior at her childhood church in Malone, Texas. Among one of her fondest memories was the opportunity to attend the 30 year anniversary of the re-opening of the church in December 2006. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Whitney. Margarete is survived by many friends and loved ones: first cousins Martha Walker Yocum and husband Denton of Pearland, TX, and Darlene Sharp Halbert and husband Jodie of Whitney, TX. Second cousins, Carolyn Fleming and husband Jeff of Austin, William Bilski Jr. of Eagle Pass, TX, Janet Crider and husband Joe of Waynesville, MO., Wayne Bilski and wife Bertha of Eagle Pass, TX, Timothy Halbert and wife Loretta of Mexia, TX, Mark Halbert and wife Lisa of Whitney, TX, Michael Yocum and wife Deborah of Houston, TX, and their families.
