Martha Cunningham

We will see you on the other side of the stars, sweet Martha. Martha Jane Cunningham received her wings on Thursday June 13, 2019. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2019, at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Whitney. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Baird Cemetery.

Martha was born August 5, 1959 in Abilene, Texas. She was the third of four children born to Rollie Bain “Tood” Cunningham and Lura Gertrude White Cunningham. Martha grew up in the tiny Texas town of Putnam where she spent many hours in the family Café run by her mother and grandmother Pearl Paregien White. Her daddy’s Mobil Gas station was her play ground where a cold drink and a sweet candy bar were always waiting for her.

Martha attended Putnam ISD before graduating from Baird High School, Baird, Texas. She furthered her education in Dallas attending Bauder School of Fashion. Martha worked in several fashion shops in Dallas before moving to Kingwood, Texas to pursue job opportunities in the Houston area. While in Kingwood, she applied and was immediately hired at an up and coming retailer opening a new venture in Beaumont, Texas! She was with the new and expanding company called Walmart for over thirty years. Martha was then transferred to Brenham, Texas where she was a valued part of the management team. One of her best days on the job was getting to meet George Strait. She talked of that day often.

While living in Brenham, Martha was thrilled to be living close to her sister and brother. But the real joy came from being able to spend time with her nieces and nephews. Martha spent many hours selecting just the right birthday or Christmas gift and loading up Easter baskets with sweet treats. She knew those children loved to eat all those treats. By the time they were all on a sugar high and running amuck, Martha would be on her way home, happy as lark, in the knowledge she had just become the best aunt ever, but not caring that the parents were not thrilled with her sweet selections.

She later opened her own shop in Burleson, Texas before moving to Whitney, Texas to care for her mother.

The parent shall become the child and the child shall become the parent. Martha lovingly gave the next thirteen years to daily and total care of her beautiful mother, Gertrude. Martha took care of Gertrude’s every need…..taking her to doctor appointments, emergency situations, hospital and rehab stays. Martha prepared every meal for her mother, took care of her personal issues and needs, put her to bed every night and got her up and dressed every day. In other words, Martha put her life on pause to devote her full attention to her mother. God will surely bless her loving devotion.

As Martha entered her heavenly home, she was greeted with loving affection by her beloved family who had prepared the way for her. And, once again, she was in the arms of her father and mother, sister; Wanda Mae Cunningham Harris and brother; Roger Neal Cunningham.

Martha is survived by her brother, Charlie Eugene Cunningham and Sylvia of Kingwood, Texas and an uncle, Carl White and Helen of Joshua, Texas. She also leaves her beloved nieces and nephews, Gena Harris, Dusty Cunningham, Amber Tiwater, Meghan Cunningham, and Kolby Cunningham; eight great nieces and nephews; one great-great niece and one great-great nephew; a host of cousins and many friends; brother-in-law, Jay Harris; sister-in-law, Candi Creecy; and sister-in-law, friend, confidant, phone therapist; Linda Luke.

Matthew 5:8 - “Happy are those whose hearts are pure, for they shall see God.”
