Martha Louise Vaughan, 94, of Hillsboro passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2015, at Town Hall Estates Nursing Home in Hillsboro. Her family will host a memorial service at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 31, 2015, at the First United Methodist Church in Hillsboro. She was born May 18, 1921 to parents J. J. Gibson and Emma Lou (Carsey) Gibson of Dallas. Martha was a graduate of North Dallas High School in 1939 and matriculated to the University of Texas, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1943.
On December 30, 1942, Martha was married to Spruill James Vaughan III. In July of 1952, the couple settled in Hillsboro. For more than 25 years, she spent teaching art history at Hill College. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Hillsboro. Martha contributed extensively to her community. She was the president and a lifetime member of the Sesame Club and served as the president of the Philotechnos Club. As a member of The Bond’s Alley committee, her tireless work contributed to its success in fundraising for the Hillsboro Public Library. During her tenure on the board of directors of the Hillsboro Restoration and Preservation Board, she was instrumental in purchasing, moving and restoring the Katy Depot. She also helped coordinate work with Restoration Architects Arci-Texas for the renovation of the historic Hill County Court House. In addition, she was a member of the Hillsboro Sesquicentennial Committee and the boards of Hill County Cell Block Museum, Hillsboro Heritage League, Hill County Historical Association and Hillsboro Main Street Project.
Martha is survived by a sister, Betty G. Massey of Dallas; daughter, Betty Kirk Vaughan of Dallas; son and daughter-in-law, Edward Gibson Vaughan and Kimberly Vaughan of Boerne; three grandchildren, James Gibson McDowell and Kelsey Kirk Marin of Dallas and Ashley Gale Vaughan of Boerne; as well as many other relatives and friends.
