Marvin Essary, 78, of Hillsboro, formerly of Amarillo, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2018, in a Temple hospital. His family will host a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2018, at the BYKOTA Baptist Church, 4022 N. E. 26th Street, Amarillo, TX 79107.
Born May 11, 1940, in Dozier, he was the son of John H. and Ruby B. (Nixon) Essary. He was a 1958 graduate of Palo Duro High School in Amarillo. Just days after his graduation, Marvin married the love of his life, Karen Sue Bradley, on August 16, 1958. After initially making their home in Amarillo, the young couple also lived in Colorado and Wichita Falls before settling in Kingwood for 30 years. They would then move back to Amarillo for 12 years before making Hillsboro their new home in 2015.
Marvin was employed for over 30 years by White Stores, Inc., first as a salesman and then as manager of stores in Longmont, CO, Wichita Falls, and Houston. He later spent 10 years managing a Reliable Battery wholesale store in Houston.
Marvin was an avid golfer and relished his many trophies and prizes in the sport during his younger days. A lover of all animals, he especially enjoyed raising show pigeons and bantam chickens. Marvin and Sue loved to travel, and after retirement toured most of the United States in their RV. In 2009, they joined the Airstream Club, enhancing the travel experience and gaining many new friends. He was a member of BYKOTA Baptist Church in Amarillo and was attending First Baptist Church in Hillsboro.
Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers, Buck, B. F., Ben, and J. C. Essary; and two sisters, Rosie White and Lucille Dudley.
Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Sue Essary of Hillsboro; two children, Gale Martin and husband, Terry, of Coldspring and Gavin Essary and wife, Nadine, of Richardson; sister, Margie “Fern” Carpenter of Amarillo; four grandchildren, Travis Reeves and wife, Ashley, Melinda Reeves, Morgan Essary, and Nicolette Essary; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Audrey Reeves; brother-in-law, David Bradley and wife, Cathy, of Amarillo; two sisters-in-law, Carol Hardy of Springhill, LA and Leta Luetkahans and husband, Ronnie, of Amarillo; and many other extended family.
