Marvin Herman Schulz, 90, of Hillsboro passed away Friday, June 7, 2013, at his residence in Hillsboro. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2013, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Michael Nemec officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2013, at the funeral home.
Marvin was born May 23, 1923 in the Savage Community to Albert and Augusta (Kaddatz) Schulz. He attended school at Savage School. As a young child, he grew up in the Salem Lutheran Church in Malone where he was baptized and confirmed.
On November 3, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army/Air Force. Marvin married the love of his life, Nelda Radke, on December 28, 1942 in the home of the preacher of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Malone. Following their marriage, he moved with his new bride to Sherman.
In 1943, he was transferred to Strother Field in Winfield, KS. Nelda and their son, Danny, had to return home when Marvin was sent to CBI (China/Burma/India) Theatre in 1945. He returned home on March 21, 1946 and the family moved to the Honey Flat Community. In December 1950, Marvin, Nelda, Danny, and Kenneth moved to a farm between Malone and Irene, where he and Nelda would live for the next 49 years. While living on the farm, he farmed and raised cattle and hogs for approximately 53 years, retiring in February 1999.
He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Malone until marrying and becoming a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, also in Malone. In February 2000, the couple moved their membership to Christ Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. He was also a long-time member of the VFW Post in West, Malone School Board, served as a director at Farmers Co-op Gin in Malone, and had served for 35 years on the Hill County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. After Nelda’s death in 2005, Marvin became an active member of the Hill Regional Hospital Senior Circle and volunteered at the hospital two afternoons a week.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; youngest son, Randy Schulz in 2006; two brothers, Felix and Herman Schulz; and a sister, Lydia Piel.
Survivors include two sons, Danny Schulz and wife, Pam, of Hillsboro and Kenneth Schulz and wife, Judy, of New Braunfels; daughter-in-law, Susan Schulz of Malone; six grandsons, Kevin Schulz and wife, Cheryl, of Abbott, Tracey Schulz of Austin, Greg Schulz and wife, Julie of Hillsboro, Kent Schulz and Kelby Schulz both of Austin, and Justin Schulz of Malone; four great-grandchildren, Daylan Schulz of Abbott and Lucy, Brady, and Lily Schulz all of Hillsboro; four sisters, Marie Sonnenburg of Hillsboro, Annie Prikryl and husband, Thomas, and Delores Ward all of Waco, and Laverne Roskydol and husband, Donald, of Lavernia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
