Mary Elizabeth Plummer Gilmore passed away at her residence in Whitney on Saturday evening, June 3, 2006. Mrs. Gilmore was born April 24, 1921 in Southside, Tennessee to George Bruce and Lulu Delina Bumpus Plummer. She graduated in 1943 from Austin Peay State College in Clarksville, Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Due to a shortage of teachers during the war, she was asked to teach and serve as principal at a one-room school for 2 years while still in college. By taking summer classes, she graduated with her original classmates with her degree. She married William Sims Gilmore on June 25, 1943. He preceded her in death on December 7, 1982. They moved to Whitney, Texas in 1946. She organized and taught the first Chemistry class ever offered at Whitney High School. She taught Math and Science at Whitney, Kopperl, Aquilla, and Covington schools in Texas. She was a charter member of Fort Graham Baptist Church. She deeply loved and appreciated family and friends. She will be remembered for her intelligence, her quick wit, her well-crafted stories told with her delightful Tennessee accent, and her strong, determined faith in Christ. She celebrated every achievement in the lives of her six grandchildren delighting in each event ? large and small. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her four brothers Ray, Lewis, Paul, and William, and by her three sisters Esther, Chloe, and Idell. She is survived by three children: Betty Ramona Gilmore of Waco, William Sims Gilmore, Jr. and his wife Marsha of Waco, Arminda Sue Lane and her husband Allan of Whitney. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Rachel Beth Lane, Amy Rebecca Lane, and Aaron Micah Lane all of Whitney; and Sarah Elizabeth Gilmore, Paul Lewis Gilmore, and Marshall Sims Gilmore all of Waco. The family requests that memorials be made to the Building Fund at Fort Graham Baptist Church at 137 FM 2604, Whitney, Texas 76692.
