Born in Temple on December 22, 1942, Mary Ann was the daughter of Dr. Robert Wells and Mary Arline (Smith) Shirey. At an early age, she moved with her family to Hillsboro where she grew up and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1960. While still in school, she married the love of her life, James C. Maass, on September 11, 1959, at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Hillsboro.
Following their marriage they lived in Corsicana before moving to Austin for their college years. While there, Mary Ann attended classes and served as the secretary to the Dean of the University of Texas Business School. The couple moved back to Hillsboro to raise their family and purchased T. B. Bond Drug Store along with other area pharmacies. During the pharmacy years, she was a energetic partner in the business and enjoyed working in the store. In addition, she also served as office manager for her father’s medical office for several years. After selling the pharmacies in the late 1980's, she and James owned and operated the family businesses, Maass Farms and Maass Trucking, for which she primarily served as bookkeeper.
A dedicated member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, she served as church organist for more than 25 years, was a member of the Daughters of the King, and also served as Senior Warden for a number of years. She also was a long-time member of the Hillsboro Sesame Club. Mary Ann loved to travel, spend time with her family and when she got the chance, loved to read a good book.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Kay Bailey; and son, Robert Maass. She is survived by her loving husband of more than 57 years, James Maass, of Bynum; daughter, Nancy Boden and husband, Dave, of Weatherford; 3 grandchildren, Josh Birdwell and wife, Brandi, of Malone, Marshall Bailey and fiancé, Victoria Cerney, of Jasper, and Matthew Boden and wife, Jessica, of Fort Worth; and 3 great-grandchildren, Eli, Landry, and Rylie Birdwell.
