Mary Elizabeth Martin passed away on March 10, 2005 at Town Hall Estates in Whitney. She was born August 19, 1916, in Dallas to Rev. Alvin and Mrs. Sallie Miller Swindell. She moved to Hillsboro in 1925 when her father became pastor of First Baptist Church. After graduating from Hill Junior College and Baylor University, she taught school in Mt. Calm and later at Harris and Franklin Schools in Hillsboro. She was organist at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors as well as at First Baptist Church for a number of years. At First Baptist she also served as librarian. She was an early member of Philotechnos Club and later of Sesame Club. She married local attorney William B. Billy Martin in 1939. He preceded her in death in 1999. Also preceding her in death were her parents, one brother, Edwin Swindell and one sister, Gladys Griffin. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Martha and Hubert Ray Caudle of Houston, and Elizabeth Ann Betty Mills of Whitney; seven grandchildren and their spouses; Jeff and Lisa Caudle of Auckland, New Zealand, Bob and Jamie Caudle of Azusa, California, Mike and Karen Caudle of Altadena, California, Jim Mills of Waco, Molly and Dan Johnson of Austin, Andy and Renea Mills of Waco, and Julie Mills of Austin, and twelve great-grandchildren.
