Mary Magnora (Foster) Sonnenburg, 93, of Hillsboro, formerly of Malone, passed away at a local hospital on Friday, December 18, 2015. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 22, at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Michael Nemec of Christ Lutheran Church presiding. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. A visitation will be held Monday, December 21 at Marshall & Marshall from 6 PM to 8 PM.
Mary was born August 17, 1922 in Farmers Branch, the daughter of Jim Dee and Virginia Evelyn (Crone) Foster. After graduating from Carrollton High School, she began making airplanes for North American Aviation where she first met Lothar Sonnenburg. She married Lothar on March 14, 1943; the couple moved to Malone in 1948.
She later worked as a switchboard operator at Hill Regional Hospital, also as a seamstress and in retail. She enjoyed gardening and her flowers, as well as spoiling her children and grandchildren. Mary was a member of Christ Lutheran Church of Hillsboro.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lothar on March 11, 1992; and a daughter, Bettye Sonnenburg.
Survivors include her children: Barbara Holman of Spring; Dian Griffin and husband, Wil of Bedford; Michael Sonnenburg and wife, Ruth of Longview; Patty Smith and husband, Lynn, of Arlington; grandchildren William Griffin, Cae Naugle, Ellen Brenan, Amanda Milani, Charles Sonnenburg and Laura Smith; and nine great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 915 Corsicana Hwy, Hillsboro, TX 76645.
