Mattie was born May 27, 1912 near Martins Mill, in Van Zandt County, Texas to William Oscar and Alma Alviera Daniel Thomas. She grew up as a child at Martins Mill in Van Zandt County. Later in years, her family moved to Mertens where she met her late husband, Ernest C. Perry. They married December 3, 1927 in Milford and he preceded her in death on May 5, 1993 after 67 years of marriage. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Mertens and Woodman of The World. Also preceding her in death were her parents; a son, Thomas Bert Perry; a brother, Harvey Thomas; and three sisters, Rena Lee Ponder, Fannie May Thomas, and Mamie Cathey; son-in-law, Doyle Harris; and a great-granddaughter, Tiffany Ellis. Survivors include three children, Van Perry and wife, Melanie, of Mertens, Mary Lou Perry Harris of Irene, and Betty Sue Perry Northern of Lubbock; one daughter-in-law, Arlene Perry of Palestine; one brother, Royce Thomas of Athens; two sisters, Avenelle Starr of Eustace and Naomi Cikanek of Athens; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 158, Mertens, TX 76666.
