Maurine Reynolds

Maurine Mash Bacon Reynolds, 101, of Round Rock, formerly of Hillsboro, passed away August 29, 2014 in Round Rock. Graveside service will be 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at Ridge Park Cemetery, with Rev. Nancy Marroquin officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.

Maurine was born on March 6, 1913 in Brandon, along with her twin brother, Maurice “Buddy” Mash, to Starrs Asbury Mash and Anna Fletcher Mash. Maurine liked to tell the tale that folks came from all around to see the twins, who were quite a surprise to their parents. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1931 and enjoyed attending her class reunions most years until she moved to Austin in her 96th year.

Maurine married Lon Bacon on July 22, 1933, which caused quite a stir in tiny Hillsboro, as Lon was 28 years older than she. “They got over it when some other gossip came along,” Maurine liked to say. Lon and Maurine owned and operated Lon Bacon Cleaners in Hillsboro. They had two daughters, Linda Ann was born in 1942 and Susan Marie was born in 1946 whom they loved dearly and spoiled accordingly.

Lon passed away on May 9, 1966.

On June 2, 1970, Maurine married Roy C. Reynolds, who helped her run Lon Bacon Cleaners until his death on August 10, 1986. Maurine retired in 1987, and began to spend her time involved in civic activities. She was a Charter Member of the Hill County Republican Women’s Club and the Philotechnos Club of Hillsboro, and a member of Les Causeuses Club. Maurine and her family were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Hillsboro.

Maurine’s grandchildren, Starrs Asbury McBurney and Julien Noah Devereux, were born in 1971. Her grandson, Emil Charles McBurney, was born in 1973. Maurine enjoyed trips to Northern California over many years, visiting her daughters, their husbands, and her grandchildren. She and Roy also enjoyed having the grandchildren come to Texas for visits in the summer.

Maurine’s daughters remember her as “the BEST Mom,” who happily moved the furniture out of the living room so that they could have “dances” for their friends, or slumber parties for their Les Causeuses Club members during their high school years. Another favorite memory of her daughters is when Maurine took Linda, Susan and four friends to the Heart of Texas Coliseum in April, 1956, to see Elvis Presley. Maurine loved to tell the story of having to hitch up her straight skirt and run to keep up with the six teenage girls as they ran to get the best possible seats. She always said that she never, for the rest of her life, laughed as much as she did that day while the huge crowd of teenage girls “screamed their heads off.”

This is a perfect example of what an amazing person Maurine was–always ready to try new things, interested in what her daughters were interested in, and open to having lots of fun. She accepted people (especially her daughters) for who they were and she did not criticize or try to change them. Her positive and optimistic attitude toward life is likely the reason she lived to be 101. When Linda asked her, on her 80th birthday, how it felt to be 80, Maurine replied, “Well, if I weren’t 80, I’d be dead.”

Throughout her life, Maurine’s many friends of all ages stayed in touch with her and came to visit her. She was always ready to lend a hand to help out anyone who needed it; she had many parties and loved to entertain at her home. In 2009 Maurine left Hillsboro and her house on Franklin Street, where she had lived since 1942, and moved to Parmer Woods, an assisted living facility in Austin. She immediately made good friends and clearly loved all those who cared for her there. Maurine was deeply loved by her family, her close friends, and by all who knew her.

Maurine dearly loved her seven great grandchildren: Brandon McBurney and his twin sisters, Emely and Stacy Smith-McBurney of Woodland Hills, California; Juna Ann and Dominic Starrs Devereux of Austin; and Griffin Shackleton and Peregrine Eva Arnot of Kentfield, California.

Maurine was preceded in death by her parents; four siblings, Earl Mash, Raymond “Si” Mash, Lois Blount Mash and her twin brother, Maurice “Buddy” Mash (Maurine said that the death of Buddy in 1952 left an empty place in her heart until the end of her life); her husbands Lon Bacon and Roy C. Reynolds; her beloved niece Margaret Mash Martin; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Maurine loved to tell her daughters, “Make young friends. People your age die.”

Maurine is survived by her daughter, Linda Bacon McBurney and husband Charles; their children, Starrs McBurney Arnot and husband, William and their children, Griffin and Peregrine, and Emil Charles McBurney and his children, Brandon, Emely and Stacy; her daughter Susan Bacon Devereux Williams and husband Wayne Williams and Susan’s son Julien Noah Devereux and wife, Danielle Iemola Devereux and their children, Juna and Dominic. She is also survived by Karen Williams Bouchon and her four children: Troy, Emily, Jessica, and Curtis; and Bonny Eason and her three sons: Matthew, Dan, and Ed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hillsboro Heritage League, P.O. Box 2, Hillsboro,Texas 76645.
