On September 14, 1991, Melvin married a loving and caring lady, Janell Holder, and inherited another wonderful son, Brian.

Over the years, Melvin owned many businesses in Hillsboro and the surrounding areas. Civic involvement was also important to him, and he served on the Hillsboro ISD Board of Trustees and as a member of the Hillsboro Optimist Club, among other organizations.
