Naomi West, 78, of Hillsboro passed away Sunday, May 12, 2019, at Homestead Nursing & Rehab in Hillsboro. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2019, in the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Darrel Beggs of Central Baptist Church in Hillsboro officiating. Visitation with the family will be held from 11:00 a.m. until service time.
Born December 19, 1940, in Fort Worth, she was the daughter of Edmond Alton and Durrillee (Justis) Slate. Following the death of her mother, Naomi lived at the Buckner Orphans Home in Dallas with her four sisters from 1954 until she graduated from Buckner Home Academy in May of 1959. In 1976, she received her Associates Degree from Hill Jr. College. She would go on to further her education with a Bachelor’s Degree from Dallas Baptist College in 1978 and receive her Master’s Degree from East Texas State University in 1984.
On August 11, 1962, Naomi was united in marriage to William Douglas “W. D.” West, Jr. in Dallas.
Naomi was employed at many different places. She worked as a clerk with the Bureau of Vital Statics for the City of Dallas 1960-1967, a clerk at Hillsboro Abstract 1969-1973, and as an office clerk at Wal-Mart in Hillsboro 1978-1980. She taught Business and Social Studies at Aquilla High School 1980-1982 and Special-Ed at Whitney High School 1990-1991. She also worked as an assistant comptroller at Criswell Center for Biblical Studies in Dallas 1983-1986, part-time office secretary at Central Baptist Church 1986-1998, part-time bookkeeper for the church 1987-1998. In 2007, Naomi retired from Cain Amusements as office manager.
She was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church in Hillsboro.
Preceding her in death were her parents; brother, Edmond Alton Slate, Jr.; sister, Mary Ruth Birdsall; sister, Patricia Ann Gohman; daughter, Durrillee Mae West; son, Kenneth Elvert West; and son, William David West.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years W. D. West, Jr. of Hillsboro; daughter, Naomi Jane Stephens and husband, Scott, of Hillsboro; brother, Robert Hugo Slate of Visalia, CA; two sisters, Bethany Elaine Wons of Paw Paw, MI and Edith Carolyn Johnson of Mineola; and four grandchildren, Kimberly Grace West, Daniel Elvert West and wife, Jodi, William Thomas Stephens, and Patricia Jean Stephens, all of Hillsboro.
