Nelson Warren Galle, 92 of Hillsboro passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Town Hall Estates Nursing Home in Hillsboro. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM, Monday, November 2, 2015 at Hillcrest Garden of Memory with Rev. Darrel Beggs officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, November 1, from 1:00-3:00 PM at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.
Nelson was born December 24, 1922, in Goliad, the son of August and Elsa Galle. He grew up and went to school in Goliad, graduating in 1941. He attended college at Texas A&I University in Kingsville before being called to serve in World War II. In 1943, he entered the U.S. Army where he served in the 628 Tank Destroyer Battalion. He remained in Europe, earning the rank of sergeant first-class, until his honorable discharge in 1946.
In March of 1946, he married Mary Eugenia (Ludy) Lyons in Runge. They traveled from the valley of Texas, north to Wisconsin, selling advertising packages for radio stations. In 1950, he purchased KHBR Radio in Hillsboro. In 1963, Nelson and J.K. Lane started publishing The Reporter Newspaper. After Lane’s death in 1979, Galle and his wife were co-owners of the newspaper.
He loved spending summer evenings water-skiing on Lake Whitney with family and friends. During his retirement years he enjoyed golfing.
Preceding him in death were his wife of 46 years, his parents, three sisters and one brother. Survivors include two sons, Roger Galle and wife, Linda, of Hillsboro, and Ray Galle and wife, Sherilyn, of Elm Mott; five grandchildren, April Sanders and husband, Lee, of Peoria, Jay Galle and wife, Stacy, of Lacy Lakeview, Toby Galle and wife, Stephanie, of the Woodlands, Rhonda Renner and husband, Marty, of Rowlett, and John Mitchell and wife, Marissa, of Corpus Christi; 14 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
