Olin Dumas

Olin Dumas, 96, of Hillsboro died Thursday, October 11, 2007, at Town Hall Estates Nursing Home in Hillsboro. Olin was born September 22, 1911 in the Revier Community near Union Bluff in Hill County, Texas to William Oscar and Bertha White Dumas. A lifelong resident of Hill County, he attended school at Arnot, Elm Springs, Lovelace, and Brandon before graduating from Hillsboro High School. He also graduated from Burns Commercial College in Dallas. On January 23, 1936 he married Mary Zada Meeks. The couple would be together for 68 years before she preceded him in death on December 8, 2004. In 1941, he went to work for Hillsboro State Bank as a teller. During World War II, he entered the U. S. Army and was stationed in the Philippines, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following his discharge from the service, he returned to the bank. He attained the office of Executive Vice-President prior to his semi-retirement in 1978. Through 1991 he continued to serve the bank as a director and consultant, completing 50 years with the organization. A dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Hillsboro, he served as a deacon and also as Sunday School Secretary from January 1952 until June of 2004. In November of 2006, the Church honored him for over 40 years of service as Treasurer by naming him Treasurer Emeritus. Olin was a dedicated, hard working husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his time at the bank, he enjoyed farming and raising cattle to help provide for his family. His favorite hobby was work, although he and Zada were serious "42" players. Also preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Charles Dumas on July 19, 2002; three brothers, Curtis Dumas, Wesley Dumas, and Vernon Dumas; and an infant sister, Mozelle Dumas. Olin is survived by his son, Stephen P. "Pat" Dumas and wife, Jackie, of Hillsboro and daughter-in-law, Kay Dumas Gwaltney and husband, Jim of Hillsboro; 3 grandchildren - David Dumas, of Waco, Debbie Reutelhuber and husband, Eric, of Anna, and Matt Dumas of Hillsboro; 5 great-grandchildren - Derek Dumas, Brittany Dumas, Ian Reutelhuber, Dillon Dumas, and Sydney Dumas; 2 sisters, Geraldine Morris of Fort Worth, and Kathleen Osteen and husband, Buford of Midland; and many nieces and nephews. The family requests that anyone wishing to make a memorial direct them to the church he served for so many years, First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 271, Hillsboro, TX 76645.
