Olive Pearl Hix, age 102, passed away Tuesday afternoon, May 2, 2017, at Homestead Nursing and Rehab Center in Hillsboro. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2017, at the Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. John Nader of First United Methodist Church in Hillsboro officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 4, at the funeral home.
Born in the Mountainview Community, Hill County, on December 30, 1914, Olive Pearl was the daughter of William Earl and LuLu (Mitchell) Girault. She attended school in Mt. Springs, McMurray, and Hillsboro. A 1933 graduate of Hillsboro High School, she went on to attend Hillsboro Junior College and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from North Texas State College of Denton (now North Texas University) in 1950.
Olive Pearl taught school for 44 years in Smith Bend, Yates, Mertens, Blum, Aquilla, and retired in 1983 after 18 years in Malone. She twice served as Superintendent during her long tenure. Upon her retirement, Olive Pearl presented to each school in which she had taught, a scrapbook compiled of her memories. Up until the day of her passing, she was always excited to visit with her former students.
In 1939, she married Albert Clark Hix and he preceded her in death in 1983.
Olive Pearl lived her entire life in Hill County where she was always active in various church and civic activities. She was a proud, lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Hillsboro and was very active in the old Wesleyan Study Group and the United Methodist Women’s Group, where she served in many capacities. She was also an active member in the Business Women’s Club of Hillsboro until it dissolved in 2007, a life member of the Hill County Retired Teachers Association, Cell Block Museum, and the Hillsboro Cemetery Association.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; brothers, W. E. Girault and Howard Brenda Girault; and two sisters, Argieree Girault and Imozelle Girault McGee.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Helen Girault of Los Fresnos; nephew, David Girault and family of McAllen; niece, Karen Poarch and family of Cleburne; and nephew, L Girault McGee and family of Hillsboro.
