Otis Hyles

Otis Hyles, 95, of Hillsboro passed away Saturday, January 25, 2014, at the Emery J. Lilge Hospice House in Fort Worth. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Danny Gilliam and Judge Bob McGregor officiating. Burial will follow at Italy Cemetery in Italy. Visitation will be from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at the funeral home.

Otis was born November 13, 1918 in Italy to Jim and Frances Leona (Prater) Hyles. He entered the United States Army in 1942 and served with the 22nd Tank Battalion in the European Theater during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart. Less than two weeks after his induction, he married Gertrude Frances Young on April 27, 1942 in Seattle, WA. Following the war, he went to work delivering ice in Italy until the couple moved to Milford in 1951, when he began farming. In 1956 the couple moved to Hillsboro and shortly thereafter, Otis went to work for Hill County where he would remain until retiring at age 65.

Following retirement, he bought his own maintainer and continued operating it until the age of 78. He bought a motorcycle at age 60 and for the next 25 years, he and Gertrude enjoyed touring on it. He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Hillsboro.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife of 66 years, Gertrude on December 16, 2008; son, Donald Hyles; grandchild, Delinda Conger; five brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn J. Conger and Patricia Hartis and husband, Jacky, all of Burleson; three grandchildren, Scott Hartis, Kirk Conger and wife, Shari, and Christy Adkins; and four great-grandchildren, Courtney Flowers and husband, Patrick, Ryan and Jarrett Adkins, and Katey Conger.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 271, Hillsboro, TX 76645.
