Peggye McMahan, of Whitney, passed away on December 30, 2013 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 4, 2013, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Whitney, with Rev. Mike Kerzee officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery. She will lie in state from 9AM - 9PM on January 3, 2014 at the funeral home.

Peggye was born on November 6, 1931, in Palacios, the first child of Fred and Jennye Mae Basham of Whitney. At the end of 1931, she moved to Whitney where she spent most of her childhood. After graduating from Whitney High School in 1949, she attended college at Hill Junior College, University of Texas and North Texas State University. In 1951, she was married to Dick McMahan and raised two sons, Patrick and Kevin. She worked for UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas for 23 years, where she was the Administrative Assistant to the Senior Vice- President for Financial Affairs.

She was an expert genealogist and complied extensive histories of the McMahan and Basham families. She loved camping and learning about the cultural history of the southwest and spent many years traveling in west Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. She was an avid reader and loved working the New York Times crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dick McMahan, and sons Patrick and Kevin, grandsons, Brandon, Ethan, and Christopher McMahan; great-granddaughters Isla and Hadley McMahan; sisters Gretchen Covell and Mike Matula; cousins, Jack, Gary and Wylie Basham and Billy and Diana Basham.
