Perry “Pat” Newton Cooper, 86, of Whitney, passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, March 16, 2015, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Whitney with Mr. Bruce Martin officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 PM at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Dallas. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 6:00 PM on Sunday, March 15, 2015, at the funeral home.
Pat was born on August 29, 1928, in Melbourne, Arkansas, to Joseph and Mittie (Estes) Cooper. He graduated from Marked Tree High School in 1947. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1954.
On May 7, 1955, he married Rebecca Elizabeth (Liz) Music in Marked Tree, Arkansas, and she preceded him in death on July 22, 2009. Beginning March 12, 1956, he worked for the Dallas Police Department, retiring on March 12, 1981. He then worked as a deputy sheriff for Dallas County as a bailiff for 14 years, retiring in 2001.
An avid bowler, he and his wife managed Forum Bowl in Grand Prairie for several years. He enjoyed fishing and playing golf and cards. He loved to read and always had a book in his hand.
A member of Whitney Church of Christ, he was also a past commander and longtime member of the American Legion Post #522 in Whitney.
Preceding him in death were his parents; three sons, Dan, Nicky and Bobby Cooper; four sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include his daughter, Ellen Forbes and husband, Bryan of Dallas; grandchildren, Kelly Roberts and husband, Dodd of Coppell, Paige Weis and husband, Jay and Matt Cooper and wife, Sarah, all of Midlothian, Julie Graves of Sugarland; ten great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
