Phil Thurber, 77, of Whitney, passed away on March 1, 2008 in Ohio. He was born on December 12, 1930 in Guss, Iowa to James and Ethel Garrett Thurber. He grew up in Iowa. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. In 1957, he moved to Texas from Michigan. Phil worked as an independent trucker and received the 20 year safe driving award from the Melton Truck Lines. He moved to the Whitney area in 1984 where he enjoyed stock car racing and horse racing as a hobby. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Linda Thurber Wiedibusch; brother, Kevin Thurber and sister, Mary Ann Daggett. Survivors include his children, Larry Thurber and wife, Gina of Hubbard; Darlene Logan of Waco, Rita Handy and husband, Jessy of Navarro Mills, Jan Gardner and husband, Ray, of Hamilton, Jody Thurber of Whitney; son-in-law, David Wiedibusch of Goldthwaite; brother-in-law, Fred Daggett of Ionia, Mich.; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
