Ralph Mooney, Sr

Ralph Mooney, Sr., 64, of Whitney, passed away on December 26, 2014, at a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, December 29, 2014, at Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Whitney. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8PM, Saturday, December 27, 2014, at the funeral home.

Ralph was born on August 2, 1950, in Athens, to Marion Howard and Avis Beatrice (Harris) Mooney. On November 29, 1967, he married Cheryl Penny in Tolosa, Texas and he worked for Sears and Roebuck on Lamar for 2 years as an order filler. In 1969, he went to work for Neauhauf Brother Packers in the stockyards. In 1970, he then went to work for Stimson Contracting Company in Garland as a heavy machinery mechanic, working there until 1987 when they went out of business.

He owned his own company, Ralph’s Equipment Service, for four years until his health forced him to retire. They moved to Whitney in October 2004 from Mesquite where he had lived for most of his life.

He loved gardening, Ford trucks and cooked a mean chicken fried steak. As a welder, he could fix anything. A self-taught guitar player, he sang in the church choir. Other pastimes he enjoyed included, fishing and camping, horses, shooting sports, weight lifting and watching westerns on television. A cowboy through and through, he loved wearing his cowboy boots.

He loved people, and loved his friends and family unconditionally. He was a member of Robinwood Baptist Church of Seagoville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Betty Mooney, and an infant sister, Bonnie Mooney.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Mooney; children, Hollie Cantrell and husband, Keith, of Forney, Billy Mooney and wife, Kimberly,of Whitney and Christie Patton and husband, Nick of McKinney; granddaughters, Calli Arriaga of Portland, Oregon, Carli Arriaga and fiancé, Dustin Shewmake, of Dallas, Caitlin Hill and husband, Joshua, of Aquilla, Hannah Smith, of Forney Courtnie Arriaga, and Candice Arriaga, of Mesquite, Brittney Mooney and Danielle Mooney of Whitney; grandsons, Zachary Smith and Noah Cantrell both of Forney; great-grandson, Jackson Shewmake of Dallas; sisters, Laura Mitchell and husband, David of Rockwall and Chenny Mooney of Dallas.
