Bob was born to Herman E. and Velma Ruby (Pugh) Moon on July 10, 1931 in Seminole, Oklahoma. He graduated from Capital Hill High School in Oklahoma City and went on to the University of Oklahoma on a track scholarship. After earning a mechanical engineering degree at OU and working in the private sector for two years, he enrolled at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, graduating from there in 1960 with a Master of Divinity degree.
While serving as an assistant pastor at Beacon Hill Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, Bob met his future wife, Claire Lewis. The couple was married on September 28, 1963 in San Antonio. Later that same year they moved to Sanderson, where Bob served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church for the next four and a half years.
In 1967, Bob answered a call to First Presbyterian Church in Hillsboro. For more than 31 years, he would serve there as pastor until his retirement in 1999. Even after retirement, he continued to be active as both Pastor Emeritus of First Presbyterian and continuing as pastor of Brandon Presbyterian Church until the church was recently dissolved.
Bob was tireless in his dedication to his community. He played an integral part in the development of Hillsboro Interfaith Ministries, where he chaired the annual Food for Families drive for many years. For 15 years, he chaired the Hill County Child Welfare Board and received an Outstanding Service Award for his work there in 2006. Other organizations he served include the Hillsboro City Library Board of Trustees, George G. and Alva Hudson Smith Foundation Board of Directors and Heart of Texas Mental Health-Mental Retardation Board.
His achievements and honors include being named the Texas Conference of Churches Rural Minister of the Year in 1998, Sam Walton Business Leaders of America Award in 1999, Community Builder Award by the Hillsboro Masonic Lodge in 2000 and Hillsboro Lions Club Citizen of the Year, also in 2000. More recently in 2005, the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce also recognized him as Citizen of the Year. In 2011, Bob was inducted into the Hillsboro Chamber Hall of Fame commemorating his many years of service to his church and community.
Bob was known for his unending patience and gentle nature, as well as being a good listener who managed to find just the right words to encourage others. He is survived by his wife, Claire Moon, of Hillsboro; two children, Robert Scott Moon of South Carolina and Lisa Thompson and husband, Tommy, of Forsan; brother, Larry Moon and sister-in-law, Wanda Moon, both of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren, Haley and Dylan Moon of West, and Hannah and Hilary Thompson of Forsan; and a number of nieces, nephews and extended family.
