Robert “Scott” Clay, 32, of Sugito, Japan, formerly of Hillsboro, passed away Friday, November 1, 2013, in Sugito. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 24, 2013, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Danny Gilliam of First Baptist Church in Hillsboro officiating.

Born December 16, 1980 in Corsicana, Scott was the son of Edwin Earl and Cindy (Bruner) Clay. As a young child, he was accepted into the Hillsboro Elementary Gifted and Talented program beginning in the first grade. On March 15, 1990, he was baptized at First Baptist Church of Hillsboro.

In high school, he participated and received many awards for UIL Drama. A 1999 distinguished graduate of Hillsboro High School, Scott was a recipient of the National Merit Scholarship, member of the National Honor Society, and was ranked 3rd in his class. On May 17, 2003, Scott graduated Magna Cum Laude from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Tele-Communications. He later received his Masters of Arts degree in Communication Studies, also from Baylor, on May 12, 2007. Later that same year, he moved to South Korea to teach English. During the holidays, he enjoyed traveling and touring the globe. At the time of his death, he was an English instructor at Heart English School in Sugito, Japan.

Preceding Scott in death were his grandfather, Robert E. "Bob" Bruner; aunt, Sherri Lynne Bruner; grandparents, John Edwin and Lenora Clay; uncle, Johnnie Trlica; great-grandfather, Marshall Smotherman; and great-grandparents,Vernon and Agnes Bruner.

Survivors include his parents, Edwin Earl and Cindy Clay of Hillsboro; wife of 2 months, Nelia Clay of Japan; sister, Kasi Lynne Clay of Arlington; brother, Corey Christopher Clay of Hillsboro; grandmother, Lynda Bruner of Corsicana; great-grandmother, Ella Frank Smotherman of Corsicana; aunt, Helen Clay Trlica of West; uncle and aunt, Charles Robert and Cindy Rosatelli Bruner and cousins, Baylor and Braedyn, all of Wylie; and great-uncles, aunts, cousins, students, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Scott Clay Memorial Fund c/o Citizen’s National Bank, P. O. Box 404, Hillsboro, TX 76645 to assist the family with final expenses.
