Robert (Bob) James Hatherly was born September 11, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan and is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and his first wife Ann. Bob was a faithful believer in Jesus Christ, husband, father, step-father, grandfather, former Navy man and a retiree from Detroit Diesel. He often liked to boast that he had been retired longer than he worked; a statement that would make him seem a lazy man to anyone that did not know him. Bob was a faithful servant to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Carrollton, Texas for many years and later to White Bluff Chapel in Whitney, Texas. Bob was hard-working, principled, determined, and a positive life force always choosing to believe in and hope for the best – not only for himself but for all he encountered.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Gail Hatherly whom he was blessed to meet after the loss of his first wife Ann. He loved both of his wives completely and with all that he had and all he could give. Early in their married lives Bob and Gail tended to raise their almost grown children and had some lovely vacations filled with adventure and companionship where among other things, they enjoyed scuba diving. In later years, Gail encountered a debilitating health event. Bob never left Gail’s side and was committed to the constant and relentless pursuit of whatever medical treatments were available to ensure her recovery and longevity.
Bob was devoted to Gail and the blended family they created. In addition to Gail, Bob is survived by their four children, six grandchildren, and bother-in-law. Bob’s surviving sons from his first marriage are Curtis Hatherly of The Colony, TX, and Bruce Hatherly and his wife Ruth of Plano, TX, Bruce’s son Corporal Austin Hatherly of the United States Marines Corps of San Diego, CA and Bruce’s daughter Audrey Hatherly of McKinney, TX. Bob’s children and grandchildren through Gail include stepson and wife Evan and Cathy Smith of Huntington Beach, CA, and their sons Matthew Smith of Sacramento, CA and Andrew Smith of Seattle, WA, and his stepdaughter Julie Smith of Plano, TX and her son Bailey West of Plano, TX and her daughter Ashlyn West of Columbia, MO. Bob’s brother-in-law is Paul Clark of Troy, MI.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to White Bluff Chapel, Folds of Honor, or Wounded Warrior.
