Robert Turner , Jr

Robert Alexander "Bob" Turner, Jr., 91, of Whitney, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2013. A memorial graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 25 at 10 AM at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro with Dr. Gerald Dudley officiating.

Bob was born on June 2, 1922 in Sulphur Springs, Texas, to the late Robert Alexander and Velma Jean (Brewer) Turner. He grew up in Dallas and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a naval aviator in the Pacific Theater. He received a Bachelor’s degree in business from Southern Methodist University. On July 28, 1963, he married Kathryn Gautier and she preceded him in death on September 13, 2000. Together they owned and operated Bob Turner Agency from 1964-1984.

Bob was a member in the Whitney Lions Club and the Rotary Club and a member and past president of the Whitney Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in helping save the Katy Bridge, saving the airport at Lake Whitney State Park and also helped in the raising lake level in the early years of the lake development all after several trips to Washington D.C. He served on the City Council and was mayor of Whitney from 1971-1976. He was a charter member of Our Lady of the Lake Episcopal Church in Laguna Park.

Always active in Pioneer Day festivities, he was selected as the 2012 Pioneer Day Grand Marshall. He enjoyed restoring antique cars and recreational flying with his sons over the years.

Survivors include his children, John Scott Pederson and wife, Liz of Azle, Suzanne Auten and husband, Perry of Whitney, Matthew Terrell Turner and wife, Evelyn of Burleson, Mark Alexander Turner and wife, Lori, of Arlington and Christopher Turner and wife, Kim of Kosse; grandchildren, Brandon Pederson, Sarah Pederson, Nicole Pederson, Amanda Soule,Dustin Haberstroh and wife, Valerie, Jack Alexander Turner, Abigail Ann Turner, Kati Jo Turner, Ashlyn Elizabeth Turner, and pet, Lilly Belle
