Roberta Connolly

Roberta Connolly, 96, of Whitney passed away Sunday afternoon, May 26, 2013 at Park Plaza Nursing Home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at the Marshall & Marshall Chapel in Whitney with Rev. Henry Radde officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM, Tuesday at the funeral home.

On January 31, 1917, Roberta was born in Meridian to Berry and Dorothy (Hastings) Johnson. She grew up there and graduated from Meridian High School and subsequently Hillsboro Junior College. She married Earl Connolly on December 31, 1939 in Whitney and he preceded her in death on October 31, 1977.

Roberta taught school for a few years at Fort Graham and Whitney Elementary schools. After her time teaching, she was a devoted farmer’s wife, adeptly handling all that job entailed. An excellent cook, she was especially known for her cakes and pies. For a time, she also worked at Cato Drug Store.

Roberta had a beautiful alto voice and loved to sing. Even during her years at Park Plaza, she continued to sing and share her talent. She was a member of King Memorial United Methodist Church and was also active for a number of years in the Huron Home Demonstration Club, where she was a charter member.

Also preceding her in death were her parents, seven sisters and one brother. She is survived by three children, Donna Duncan and husband, Ned, of Tyler, Nancy Sullivan and husband, Richard, of West, and Chris Connolly and wife, Cindy, of Whitney; 5 grandchildren, Traci Lampman and husband, Chad, of Lakeside Village, Johnny R. Chapman, Jr. of Huntsville, Tonya Knauth and husband, Rick, of Houston, Randina Sullivan and husband, Chad Lovett, of Spring, and Julee Connolly of Whitney; as well as a number of great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
