Roy L. Underwood, 92, of Whitney, passed away on July 23, 2014, at his home. Graveside services under the direction of Marshall and Marshall Funeral Directors, Whitney, will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, July 28, 2014, at Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro, with Mr. Terry Taylor officiating. Visitation will take place from 1:00 to 2:00 PM prior to the service at the cemetery.
Roy was born on May 28, 1922, in Grandview, to Oscar and Ethel Mae (Strength) Underwood. During World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1946. On July 4, 1942, he married Reba Mitchell in Italy and she preceded him in death on July 7, 2010. After his military service, he worked for Breneman Hartshorn, a venetian blind and window treatment company while attending night school at SMU.. He then went to work for Methodist Hosptial as a credit administrator from 1949 - 1956.
In 1956, he and his wife, Reba, opened a furniture store in Lancaster- Underwood Furniture and Floor Covering- later changing to furniture and appliances before they retired in 1988. They moved to Whitney in 1983, where he and his friend, Clyde Watts started a lawn service business and continued until 2008.
Roy and Reba enjoyed traveling to many places around the world and taking photographs of all the places they visited which included China, Japan, Ireland, Holland, Mexico, Hawaii, and Guam. Hunting and fishing were other pastimes he enjoyed as well as growing and grafting trees.
A member of the Lions Club in Lancaster, he served in many different offices over the years and was also a member of the Lancaster Volunteer Fire Department. In addition, he was a member of the Whitney VFW Post # 522. He was of the Methodist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by children, Randy L. Underwood and Charlyse L. Underwood; grandson, Rustin L. Underwood; granddaughters, Rebecca S. Reynolds and Cheyenne L. Searcy; and great-grandson, Kadyn Reynolds; sisters, Jessse Branson,Ollie Mae Underwood, Marie Dye and Mae Lopez.
