Ruth Murphree

Ruth Murphree, 93, of Hillsboro passed away Wednesday evening, June 15, 2016, at Town Hall Estates Nursing Home in Hillsboro. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2016, at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Paul Clark of Walnut Street Baptist Church in Hillsboro officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, June 17, at the funeral home.

Ruth was born March 3, 1923 in Hillsboro to John J. and Nannie (Dutton) Allen. She lived in Hillsboro all of her life. On June 12, 1941, she married Clarence James “Bub” Smith. He preceded her in death on September 22, 1964. In her early married years, Ruth enjoyed going bowling at the bowling lanes in Hillsboro. She later married Kenneth W. Murphree on April 12, 1973 and he preceded her in death on August 21, 1998. For a number of years, she worked as a salesperson for Malouf Manufacturing in Hillsboro, retiring in 1988. She and her sister, Lillian Ball, spent many hours together quilting. Ruth was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church in Hillsboro.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; foster parents, W. O. “Wilburn” and Ruby Dyer; son, John Richard Smith on October 29, 2013; brother, Grady Allen; and sister, Lillian Ball.

Survivors include her children, Jimmy Smith and wife, Donna, of Robinson and Jackie Bearden of Hillsboro; five grandchildren, Damon Smith and wife, Tammy, Kyle Smith and wife, Amy, Kirk Smith and wife, Melody, Jason Bearden and wife, Sheri, and Jana Nors and husband, Kenneth "Bo"; ten great-grandchildren; and many other extended family members.
